"HEALTHLINES" as seen in:
Congratulations on Dateline NBC!
Q.
Dear Dr. Garner...I saw the
Dateline NBC
you were in and I wanted to say congratulations! I
have been reading your articles for over a year now, and it
was impressive to see you on national TV.
I can totally relate to the two people you helped on
Dateline.
There are so many times before that I have wanted to email
you. Now I have the courage to. I hate my smile
so much that I never open my mouth very wide even to
talk. My teeth are crooked. To make it even
worse, they always look stained and dirty no matter how
much I bleach them. My mother gave me tetracycline
when I was a baby. My dentist tells me that the
bleaching will probably not make them any whiter. It
won’t be long until 2005 will be here, and I want a
new me! Any hope for me?
A.
Thank you for taking the time to email me. I would
welcome the chance to give you a smile that will no longer
inhibit you from smiling or feeling free to laugh or talk
whenever you want. I once had a tetracycline patient
tell me, “until I got my veneers, people thought I
was mean because I never looked happy.” Your
dentist is right. Tetracycline
was an antibiotic that was widely used during the
‘50s and ‘60s, and
ruined millions of
children’s teeth before doctors were told of its
damaging effects.
Aesthetic correction of this condition, is one of the
hardest procedures to master in cosmetic dentistry.
The tetracycline stain is deep down within the very core of
the tooth, and unfortunately, bleaching will not reach
these internal layers effectively.
I have been giving new smiles to patents with tetracycline
stains for over 19 years.
This procedure requires the proper combination of the right
color of veneer, with the correct bonding agents to mask
the tetracycline stain so that we can give you the smile
you have always wanted.
Give yourself a special gift...an awesome new smile, and
begin 2005 with a new you.
I can assure you that this gift will give you so much joy
and will outlast most any present you might ever
receive. Come in for your
complimentary
consultations and computer imaging. Don’t
put it off any longer. See why patients from Hawaii
to Massachusetts come to me for their cosmetic dental
needs. I can help you.
Is
Your Smile Hurting Your Love Life?
Q.
I am so self conscious about my ugly teeth, that I rarely
smile. I am a 27 years old professional, and I'm
tired of hiding my smile. Not too long ago, I had a
date and the guy actually had the guts to tell me that I
was beautiful, except for my smile! I nearly cried
right there in the restaurant, and I haven't been able to
clear that out of my mind. The truth of the matter is
that he was right. I am an attractive person, I have
a "killer" body, but my smile kills it for me. I am
ready to find that special someone, but my unattractive
teeth (especially my ugly front bridge), definitely affects
my love life in a very negative way! Would you be
willing to visit with me?
A.
Most definitely. In today's competitive dating world, you
can hardly afford to lose out because of an unattractive
smile. Repeated studies have shown that attractive
people win over unattractive people, whether we like it or
not. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry's
survey revealed that 92% say an attractive smile is an
important social asset. In less than 25 seconds after
meeting someone, they are looking at your smile. The
smile and the mouth are a very intimate part of sexuality
and unattractive smiles are turn offs for many people.
For professionals such as yourself, porcelain veneers
may be just what you need to be at the top of your game.
Most likely, in just two visits, approximately one
week apart, we can take your worries of having ugly teeth
away forever! New materials and technology can create
bridge work that is so realistic, that no one can tell you
were not born with them. The best part will be is
that while we are bringing your teeth back to a healthy
condition, you can enjoy all the benefits of having a newer
and brighter smile with cosmetic dentistry. Your
unattractive smile can be a thing of your past. You will
not believe the difference and the renewed confidence this
can give you. The trend today is for individuals to
take the initiative in fixing or changing their image to
have the best look they can have. Call my office and we
will go over your particular concerns. With a simple
consultation, we can review your individual smile and do a
digital computer simulation to take a look at your smile
options before any work is actually done. We can
discuss the latest technology and help you select the best
possible choice for the cosmetic enhancements you wish to
obtain. Creating an attractive smile demands artistry and
precision. It's important to your health, self-confidence,
and in the way you see yourself, as well as how others see
you, to have a nice healthy, complimentary smile. See
for yourself why patients from Hawaii to Massachusetts come
to Little Rock to see me for their dental needs.
Image is such a crucial part of life. It is my
philosophy in cosmetic dentistry to be a partner in helping
you meet your personal goals. I look forward to
visiting with you in the very near
future.
Is
Your Smile Hurting Your Sales?
Q.
I am a real estate agent. As you might expect, I am
constantly meeting new clients and trying to close sales. I
have to make presentations to corporate executives (men and
women) for commercial deals. Real estate has become
extremely competitive so I am working hard to keep my 54
year old body looking good. Everyone I know is whitening
their teeth these days to have a cleaner and younger smile.
My problem is that some of my front teeth have old
ugly crowns on them. I am afraid that if I bleach my
teeth, it will make everything look worse since every tooth
is a different color already.
Help!
A.
You are correct. Crowns will not whiten with bleaching
agents. Neither will bridgework or old fillings. The
best candidate for getting whitening results are those
individuals who are 30 years and younger who have thick
enamel on natural, but yellow teeth. As we age, we lose the
thickness of our enamel, teeth naturally darken and
bleaching becomes ineffective. The other point is that many
of the people you "think" have had their teeth whitened,
have actually received cosmetic dentistry via new crowns
and porcelain veneers! Do not lose heart. You can have a
bright white smile with a combination of veneers and crowns
that all match together in a totally youthful way. The
crowns and veneers we do in our office look like natural
teeth. We can also give you "instant orthodontics" if you
have slightly crooked or spaced teeth as well. Slightly
lengthening worn down teeth also creates a dramatic effect
and stops that old looking "straight across effect teeth"
get as they age. Years ago, we did not have the new white
bleach shades available for crowns and veneers that we have
today. So, it is no problem whatsoever to give you the
smile you are seeking and we also use restorations that do
not have that unattractive black around the gum line that
you commonly see. Your new smile can be as white as you
want. Please don't hesitate to schedule a visit to come
into my office for a complimentary consultation. We will do
a computer imaging of what you want your smile to look
like. A new smile can give you the extra edge of confidence
you need in your profession. It will automatically make you
look younger and your competitors are having these
procedures done, so it is important that your image be at
its best. See for yourself why patients from Hawaii to
Massachusetts come to Little Rock to see me for their
dental needs. Image is such a crucial part of life. It is
my philosophy in cosmetic dentistry to be a partner in
helping you meet your personal goals. I look forward to
visiting with you in the very near future. Be sure to tune
in and watch the two amazing smile makeovers that I have
just completed for Dateline NBC!
Dear
Dr. Garner:
Q.
I am in my late forties. I am recently divorced and
have been dating a guy for almost a year now. He
treats me like a queen and has a great body. His face
is handsome enough, but his teeth are so yellow and worn
down, it turns me off. Sounds awful, but he is
constantly going to the gym to work out to look good, but
his teeth kill it for him. My question is …
what is a nice way to get him to come in and see you to
have his smile redone?
A.
Please do
not
be embarrassed by your question.
Today, there is a
big
emphasis on how a person’s smile
looks.
In a survey conducted by the American Academy for Cosmetic
Dentistry, over 75% of adult Americans who responded
believed an unattractive smile could ruin a person’s
chances for career success. Additionally, an
AACD’s survey revealed that 92% of respondents say an
attractive smile is an important social asset and less that
50% are dissatisfied with their smile.
In fact, I have both men and women accuse me of ruining it
for them in their dating life. People have become so
smile conscious especially when they have their own teeth
redone that they find it hard to date anyone that
doesn’t have a nice smile.
So,
how do you tell him to come see me for a new smile?
Being a cosmetic dentist and not Dear Abby; I will have to
leave that up to you.
You can tell him how you would love to see what a new smile
would look like on him and you could
both
come in to have a computer imaging done. Most people
when they can visualize how a new smile can improve their
looks will do whatever it takes to make that happen.
Best new is, that unlike working out, he will
have his handsome new smile in just two visits, a little
over a week apart.
We have also found that some people will dress to the nines
and take excellent care of themselves in every way,
but ignore their teeth. He may just need a little
nudging from you.
Good
Luck. I hope to see you both in my office real
soon. Then we will all be
smiling!

IS YOUR SMILE HURTING YOUR CAREER?
Q.
I am so self conscious about my ugly teeth, that I rarely
smile. I am only 36 years old, and I’m tired of
hiding my smile. I’m in real estate sales, and
I sell all day, nearly everyday. I know that a

YOU
ARE NEVER TO OLD FOR A GREAT SMILE
Q.
Dear Dr. Garner: I am 72 years old and for most of my life,
I've had good dental care. Going to the dentist was
important to my mother, so I have all of my teeth, although
nearly every one of them has some sort of dental filling,
cap, or such holding it together. My dentist says that my
gums are in amazing condition, but is reluctant to address
my concerns, which are the structural soundness of my
teeth, and the wearing down and shortening of my teeth and
bite. Then, of course, you never get too old to want to
look beautiful and have a lovely model's smile! I still
consider myself an attractive person even at my age, but
I'm beginning to get that nose closer to the chin look you
see in people my age. Since my dentist apparently thinks
I'm too old to have the smile I want, I am looking at
options. Do you think there is a time when a mouth should
just be left alone to deteriorate as mine has? My doctor
just says "we'll watch these, and if something breaks, you
just give me a call". I'm not stupid. I know that with
today's gadgets, my mouth could be brought back to life
again! Would you be willing to take a look at
me?
A.
Anytime. You just schedule a complementary consult with me
whenever it's convenient for you. I'll never forget what
one of my 82 year old patients told
me...
"You
know Dr. Garner, I've always wanted to have a great smile,
and I'm going to do this. My kids are all going to fight
over my money when I'm gone anyway, and this is one thing
that I'm doing for myself...and besides, I can take these
with me"! She's been a wonderful and fun person to work
with. Her smile is beautiful and she has had no regrets
about her decision to improve her smile and her health. No
matter what age we are, there is nothing wrong with
striving to look our best. More importantly, so much is
written today about the correlation between heart problems
and poor dental health. I have always been deeply opposed
to the philosophy of "supervised neglect" where dentists do
nothing to intervene in the downward slide of dental
debilitation but continue to observe it year after year
until a patient becomes a dental cripple. I applaud you for
taking the initiative to realize that you have the power to
change things. I know that a beautiful and healthy smile
can be yours. Please do not ever hesitate to write or email
me. I look forward to seeing you soon.
EXTREME
SMILE MAKEOVERS
Q.
Dear Dr. Garner, I heard that you are the one in Arkansas
to see if you want an Extreme Smile Makeover like Dr.
Dorfman does in Hollywood on ABC’s Extreme
Makeover. I would love to have a Hollywood
Smile Makeover. I am 53 years old and my smile has
seen better days. I don’t go to the dentist as
often as I should. I know that a new smile would make
me look ten years younger, and I’m ready to do this
for myself. I know I’ll be a happier person in
the end, especially if the teeth looked natural. Does
it take six weeks like it does on the show? Would you
be willing to see me?
A.
You bet. Dr. Bill Dorfman and I have been friends for
many years. We do the exact same cosmetic
dentistry right here in my Little Rock office as he does in
Hollywood. Bill has been a guest in my office
and he highly respects my work. We use the exact same
porcelain veneer techniques and even the same brands of
materials as he uses to create his famous veneers on movie
stars such as Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luke Perry,
Hunter Tylo and even Ozzy! Come see me.
You will be happy to know that our fees are approximately
one-half the Hollywood fees due to the lower cost of living
in Arkansas. You don’t have to wait six
weeks in my office for your new smile. We complete
our makeovers in just two visits, spaced about one week
apart. Natural is my trademark. I love for all
my patients’ new smiles to be absolutely dazzling and
eye-catching, but never fake, thick or denture-like.
Experience does count. My veneer work on Miss America
participants was featured on Entertainment Tonight, and to
work on these discerning beautiful women, I must produce
the highest level of aesthetic dental artistry
possible. Achieving natural looking veneers depends
upon many things...the type of veneer, how the teeth are
sculpted, how the veneer color is interwoven with the
patient’s hair, eye and skin color, the shape of the
face, eyes, lips and mouth...all these things must be
considered for outstanding results. It’s
a talent for blending dentistry with artistic skill,
combined with the experience of placing thousands of
veneers over many years, which creates beautifully natural
smiles. You deserve a great smile!
Creating an attractive, natural smile demands
artistry and precision. It’s important to
your health, self-confidence, and in the way you see
yourself, as well as how others see you, to have a nice
healthy, complimentary smile. There is no doubt that
we can give you the smile of your dreams. Don’t
hesitate to visit me for a no fee consultation.
I can show you hundred of photos of my actual patients who
have had their lives changed in a very positive way by
having their smiles improved. See for yourself why
patients from Hawaii to Massachusetts come to Little Rock
to see me for their dental needs. I look forward to
visiting with you in the very near
future.

“SMILE-LIFT" IS INSTANT "FACE
LIFT"
Q.
Recently, I got together with my girlfriends for our
yearly “gals night out”. I noticed that one of
my friends looked remarkably younger. When we excused
ourselves to the “ladies room”, I asked her to
be honest with me... “Have you had a facelift?”
And, to my
surprise, she said.. “No, but I just
had my teeth redone by Dr. Garner”. It was
unbelievable the difference that it made. I couldn’t
take my eyes off her smile. She truly looks ten years
younger and now, of course, I want what she has! I’ll
get my facelift in a few years, but I really want a
“smile-lift” now. My dentist said that I
don’t have any cavities so why would I want cosmetic
dentistry? He just blew me off basically. It upset me, and
I know without a doubt that my smile looks aged, and my
teeth are making me look older than I want to be. I know
now, more than ever before, what a great smile can do for a
woman’s appearance. I’m bothered that my
dentist can’t see beyond fillings and toothaches and
listen to me.
A.
I really understand how you feel. Some dentists
don’t feel confident or skilled in cosmetic
dentistry, so it is natural for them not to recommend it.
Seeing the smiles of dentists around the country, I can
tell you that many don’t see the importance of having
a
nice smile themselves. People come to me, hiding
their smiles with their hands, avoiding smiling, avoiding
eye contact and feeling like they’ve had their
personalities subdued because of a fear of smiling. Each
week, I hear patients with similar stories as yours,
tell
me that it is even “painful” to
smile. If you are not happy with your smile, that’s
what matters. If that’s the case, the good news is
that you do not have to have an unattractive smile any
longer. With a simple consultation, we can review your
particular smile and do a digital computer simulation to
take a look at your smile options before any work is
actually done. For most patients, I can easily correct the
problems and create a new smile in just two visits spaced
approximately one week apart. Creating an attractive smile
demands artistry and precision. It’s important to
your health, self-confidence, and in the way you see
yourself, as well as how
others see you, to have a
nice healthy, complimentary smile. There is no doubt that
we can easily pull years off your face by giving you a
healthier, more youthful smile. Don’t hesitate to
visit me for a no fee consultation. I can show you hundred
of photos of my actual patients who have had their lives
changed in a very positive way by having their smiles
improved. See for yourself why patients from Hawaii to
Massachusetts come to Little Rock to see me for their

very near future.
I
CAN'T SMILE WITHOUT EMBARRASSMENT.
Q.
I am so self conscious about my ugly teeth, that I rarely
smile. I am only 32 years old, and I’m tired of
hiding my smile. I’m a pharmaceutical
representative and I call on doctors all day, nearly every

open more doors for me both personally and
professionally. Would you be willing to visit with

I AM SCARED I WILL END UP IN DENTURES!
Q.
I am so nervous that I am going to lose my teeth and end up
in dentures. I am only 52 years old, but the thought
of dentures brings chills down my spine. My
grandfather used to take his teeth out of his mouth to try
and scare me when I was young. I gave up on my own
dentist awhile back. My gums are receding and some of
my front teeth are so worn down that the brown in my teeth
are showing, but he won’t recommend doing
anything? Shouldn’t I be
worried?
A.
Most definitely. Come in right away for a no fee
consultation!
Worn teeth and receding gums are warning signs to me that
you need immediate attention. Do not put this off any
longer. Receding gums can be an indication of
periodontal disease which can result in tooth complications
and eventual tooth loss. Worn teeth where you are
showing the brown dentin layer can lead to tooth
sensitivity, root canals, and tooth loss as well.
Worn teeth can also be because you are clinching or
grinding your teeth.
This is a serious problem, and should be remedied soon.
Your prognosis can be good and you could free yourself of
some major expense and problems down the road , if we can
address them right now.
In just
two visits,
approximately
one week
apart, we
can possibly take your worries of having dentures
forever!
The best part will be is that while we are bringing
your teeth back to a healthy condition,
you can enjoy all the benefits of having a newer and
brighter smile with cosmetic dentistry.
Your unattractive smile can be a thing of your past after
we replace your old crowns with natural, life-like ones
that will protect your dentin layer. You will not
believe the difference and the renewed confidence this can
give you. The trend today is for individuals to take
the
initiative in fixing or changing their image
to have the best look they can have.

CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Q.
Dr. Garner, I am 47. About a year ago, I found out that my
husband of 19 years, was cheating on me. We have just
concluded our divorce. He is dating a woman who is 32. As
you can imagine, this has left me devastated. I never felt
like I looked good enough for my husband. He was constantly
making remarks about how I needed to lose weight (even
though I work out at the gym 3 days a week) and was
critical of how dark and bulky looking my teeth were. I
received an antibiotic as a child that made my teeth
unattractive. When I was in college, my parents had my
teeth capped, and living in a rural community, the job back
then was less than Hollywood! I have decided to begin
dating (something that terrifies me), and I want to have my
smile completely redone. I don't want the negative effects
and bad emotional scars associated with my teeth, to hold
me back. I am sorry to take so much of your time, but would
you be willing to help me? I want to smile and never worry
again about hiding my smile. I want 2004 to be the best
year of my life.
A.
You go girl! I applaud you for having the courage to change
those things that you can change about yourself that you
don't like. It is all up to you...and changing your smile
so you can feel confident and good about yourself is
something you can do quickly in as little as two visits a
little over a week apart. Give me a call today and we will
schedule a personal consultation and computer imaging. Your
antibiotic stains were most likely left from tetracycline,
and the dental correction is among one of the more
difficult procedures dentists do. In an attempt to hide
these dark stains, the teeth are crowned, veneered, or a
bonding material is put over them. However, in most cases,
the patient end up receiving thick and bulky teeth where
the dark stains still bleed through the coverings. I have
been working with tetracycline stained teeth for over 18
years, and I have perfected a treatment method that allows
incredibly natural results to be obtained. I might add in
closing, that I have male patients tell me all the time how
attracted they are to women with great smiles. Thank you
for writing to me. I would love t help you reach your goal
of making 2004 the best year of your life. Come see for
yourself why patients from Hawaii to Massachusetts come to
see me for their cosmetic dental needs.
